Matthew McClurkin's father, Donnie McClurkin has two-year-old brother was murdered when he was eight years old when they were both struck by a speeding car.

McClurkin's family was in upheaval when his brother died, and soon after, he was sexually abused as a youngster by his great uncle and, years later, by his great uncle's son. His aunt, a backup singer for gospel singer Andraé Crouch, and attending to church helped young McClurkin cope with the struggles of having two sisters who struggled with drug addiction.

He started his first group, the McClurkin Singers, while he was only a teenager; his latter group, the New York Restoration Choir, has records dating back to at least 1975.
